The 300MB download of the HD ingame trailer has finally completed. While watching, some things stood out. I know the game is "work in progress", but since two heads are better than one, I'm taking the liberty of reporting those oddities anyway.
The loading screen at 0:45 says
"THEY ROSE IN THE UNRESTS OF THE FIRST RACE WARS ON SABIADOR AND EXPANDED THERE RANGE OF OPERATIONS IN SUCH A DRASTIC WAY THAT THEY WERE EXCOMMUNICATED BY THE CHURCH OF THE PRESERVERS"
I think this should be
"THEY ROSE IN THE UNRESTS OF THE FIRST RACE WARS ON SABIADOR AND EXPANDED THEIR RANGE OF OPERATIONS IN SUCH A DRASTIC WAY THAT THEY WERE EXCOMMUNICATED BY THE CHURCH OF THE PRESERVERS"
1:48 - the speedometer shown in the HUD was measuring imperial units (MPH), however the item descriptions shown during 1:48 and later show speeds using the metric system (KM/H). Distance to objects is also measured using the metric system.
2:13 - the window lists three neutral ships.
"COLONY SHIP AURAVIA"
"COLONYSHIP CHARIS"
"COLONYSHIP DIONE"
Due to uniformity, it should either be "COLONYSHIP" or "COLONY SHIP" and not a mixup of both. My vote is on "COLONY SHIP", since that's used later in the trailer ("DEFEND THE COLONY SHIPS").
2:55 - missilelauncher. This should be two words. And what happened to the words being all capitals?
4:22 - loading screen. There shouldn't be a space between the word "CYBERNETICS" and the full stop / period.
OK, ok, I'm done being a smart ass - for now ;)

www.dict.cc say this:"Engrish [humorous expression for the Japanese way of speaking English]"What have the Japanese to do with German people how make some English mistakes?
I think it's good to get the english correct from the start. While only small errors, they do project a certain amount of professionalism if done correctly.
May I remind people of NC1 NPC Dialog ;)

I'll add the the "Wingman"s message that is seen at 4:50 and again later in the trailer.

I hope that speed/distance measurements in the final game are not in either miles or kilometers. Speeds of spacecraft are incredible by the standards of us terrestrial folks. I liked Alternity's designation: the Megameter (MM), a thousand kilometers. Also, a spacecraft should not have a speedometer, except in relation to another item. So if you target something, you can have "Closing Speed" or "Relative Speed". Otherwise you'll have wookies living with ewoks, and everyone knows how that goes...
But in any case, please don't use MPH. I say this as an American. Metric or some fantasy units, please.

Not a bad suggestion at all.

fantasy units all the way, but i dunno about the speedo, i think at least showing the output of the engines to represent speed, altho having speeds would be essential when setting up formations before a fight.

There has been some complain about the voice acting in the trailer, but coming from a german company I think it's a wonderful trailer.

I noticed their (lol) spelling error, but I have to admit; I’d not looked hard enough to spot any inconsistencies. That’s what the beta is for really.
Submit them as bug reports, and they generally get sorted.
On another note – as an Engrish (lol again) man, I’d be more than happy with MPH; although I have no issue converting it to KPH in my head.

lol, there was spelling mistakes in the trailer? pfft I don’t know about you but I didn’t take any notice of the wording, just enjoyed glammering at the beautiful in-game graphics.

Not so sure about the forbearance. If I can make out spelling and other errors at 1:30 in the morning, so can Reakktor during daytime. And since I'm German, too, being German doesn't count as an argument for me ;)
@ blipblipblur
Are you referring to the apostrophe? That's something that keeps popping up more and more frequently, even in our own language. It's still an error, it even has its own designation (idiot apostrophe), and still folks keep using it in the wrong places.
Alright, alright, I admit I'm obsessed with correct spelling and punctuation of my own language as well as English. Don't care about other languages, because I don't know them :p

I respect you, good sir.
I congratulate you on your near-perfect use of the English language. :)

Denglish [German language full of English words and phrases] [coll.] i have the skillzzz.
Don't worry, there'll be plenty of time during the beta to knock out these dents. As the trailer says right at the beginning, it's still work in progress and not representative of the final quality.
I hope you're all as eagle-eyed when the beta gets going!

Please point out those near-perfect passages to me. After all, I have to know what's wrong, or how something could be written / expressed in a better way in order to hone my abilities.

well actually i was referring to the "last yesterday" bit, if yesterday wasn't the last yesterday, then it wouldn't be yesterday, you don't say it happened two yesterdays ago. well some do but there the ones who think jack black works down there local supermarket.

I see, however I assumed it was meant more along "last post is from yesterday", or "last post: yesterday" as a short version.

yer but it came out as last yesterday, which is why i laughed
I'm pretty sure the 0:45 phrase the original poster quoted should say "UNREST" and not "UNRESTS."
Edit: In the TYI description, it should say "AT FIRST GLANCE" and not "AT THE FIRST GLANCE."

Whatever it is that you're on; I want some.
LasseBlutströmen
09-04-2009, 17:31
It's called "common sense". You sure you want some? :p
Just as an example: How would you calculate 100/1,739? The result is either 57,504 or 0.058, depending on who you ask.
In the US, the comma is used for digit grouping, where in the EU, we use the period. It's similar with languages. One can't know every tiny detail, no matter how hard one tries. Someone foreign to a language will always miss something or interpret it the wrong way.
RabbiFang

I'm not debating that. I am, however, debating that what you're in fact on, is common sense. I suspect it's glue. :D
In NC2 in the Gaia Mine missions on playing the english version most of the instructions are in German. Those instructions are the only bits of a foreign language I understand. :o

OK, you beat me there. I don't have the slightest clue what glue can do to people. I'll leave the resolution of the matter in your experienced hands ;)

Just to bring up another very good non-US series:
Gothic I, II, III (although I never played 3)
Good translations, just with some funny phrasing sometimes. As long as it doesn't interfere with gameplay I'll be fine with it.

I think most Americans, myself included would never notice that.
You must be British or something.
No one is 100% perfect at English, and I suck at it even though it is my only language.
As long as the loading screen doesn't say "TAKE OFF EVERY ZIG!", I think the game will be just fine =)

With regards to units and measurements couldn't all that be resolved in an options menu?
For example Excel (please bear with my example ) allows you to change the way you separate values 1000 or 1,000 or 1-000, and with readings of mass, velocity, weight and so on, a background conversion could occur behind the HUD program to convert MPH to KPH or even Meters per second?
Also translation. Isn't it simple enough just to get some person from a certain language just to read and rewrite sentences into a comprehensible version for the desired region? To shorten the process you could always just pass sections off to the Beta testers to rewrite (using distinguished passages for example 1: Tim drove over the cat 2: No I didn't) that way they could post it back to you via the bug report tool or related version.
p.s. I noticed a post regarding the speed (partly why I wished to reply), in the Trailer it looks like the game isn't using newtonian physics for flight (more like flying in an arcade game to make it easier to adapt to) therefore it would be easier to read speed in MPH/KPH/etc instead of a relative velocity (with relative velocity you would require a point in space to judge speed as a ship moving at the same speed as you would read as 0Mph)
I hope you're all as eagle-eyed when the beta gets going!
